My Story With Astrology

When I was twenty-nine and moderating medical conferences for a living, a colleague at work suggested that I see an astrologer. “I’m not that desperate,” I laughed. “Really?” she asked with a gently raised eyebrow. Well…I saw the astrologer. And my skeptical, rational self was blown away. Not only did she accurately describe my personality patterns but also was able to pinpoint why I was struggling in certain areas of my life and offer practical advice on how to change it. It was a life-changing reading because she was a good astrologer and because I followed up and did the work. My life changed significantly for the better.
A year later I began studying astrology.

Sheila Roher, MPH has been studying and practicing astrology for three decades. She holds a master’s degree in public health. She is available for consultations, workshops, and speaking engagements.

The birth chart is a symbolic picture of the moment you incarnated. It shows the unique combination of energies, instincts, drives, talents, and challenges that you embody in potential. But the chart doesn’t show the consciousness you bring to the journey—the ‘x’ factor that makes all the difference—which is why interactive readings (rather than computerized programs) offer a unique potential to delve more deeply into yourself and your life.

How do I prepare for a reading?

Prior to our session, please send:

You may book a consultation out of simple curiosity about astrology. Most likely you have some questions or areas of concern. Or perhaps you sense that you’re on the verge of some change that hasn’t yet percolated into form. So it’s a good idea to seriously consider:

How/where do I want to be focusing my energies?
What gets in my way of feeling connected and whole?
Are there any areas of significant frustration or confusion in my life?

Notes on Different Types of Readings

Individual readings

Individual readings include an exploration of your birth chart plus looking at current and future (12-14 months) influences. The goal of an interactive reading is to identify and evoke the key themes, energetic patterns and core purpose shown in the chart, and encourage clients to live with more confidence and self-awareness. Follow up readings for clients focus on current and upcoming issues in the context of the person's life journey.

Relationship readings

Walt Whitman celebrates the fact that we ‘contain multitudes’ but in practice, it’s a challenge. Bring in another person (with their own internal choir) and it’s amazing we do as well as we do. But we can do better if we will see others and ourselves more clearly.

Parent/Child Readings

How can you be the best parent for your child? A comparison of parent & child charts can identify key themes and suggest ways to approach differences. Example: a very caring mother felt frustrated that her young son seemed to reject her affection. For this child with a moon-Saturn contact in his chart, practical issues of reliability and trust were more important for building trust and communication than demonstrations of affection. This relationship challenged the mother to think about how she was communicating reliability, clarity, and structure to her son. Once she understood his natural needs, she could adjust her expectations and appreciate him for the truly loving guy he is.

Caregivers at the spiritual edge readings

Caregiving brings us to the spiritual edge: we either grow with the challenge or become overwhelmed with fears, resentment and suffering. Readings for caregivers focus on framing the caregiving challenge in the larger context of one’s life and exploring the ancient alchemical teachings of transforming lead into gold.

I do not diagnose or treat illness. But illness happens within a person’s life. Astrology offers a non-pathological description of energetic processes that may manifest in physical, emotional, and mental dynamics. Recognizing and honoring our needs and instincts are crucial to building and maintaining health. Indeed, often illness may be the body’s way of calling us home.

Lecture plus Q & A

What can the birth chart of President Trump tell us about his basic nature, the current opportunities and challenges he faces, and how his chart interacts with the chart of the USA? Quite a lot.

This is not a partisan political event, but rather an opportunity to look at what his presidency may be saying about the times we are in and what themes most need to be addressed.

Workshops

For the first quarter of 2018, I’m offering two workshops devoted to Mars and Saturn. In traditional astrology, these planets were considered ‘malefic’, yet we can’t make anything work or institute meaningful change that lasts without them.

These will be interactive and experiential workshops, combining lecture with practical exercises and sharing examples from our lives. Astrology really comes alive when we see how these energies work in our lives, so we will work with the charts of people in the room as well as from history.

Requirements: interest in (but not necessarily knowledge of) astrology; birth chart (send me your birth time, date, and place and I’ll run it for you).

Saturn in Capricorn: Creating your 3-year renovation plan

Astrologer and Jungian therapist Liz Greene called Saturn “the spine of the chart”, because our ability to act responsibly and authentically depends on how well we work with Saturn’s challenges.

Saturn just entered the sign of Capricorn and will be there through 2020.

When Saturn changes signs (every 2-1/2 years) there’s a need to restructure particular areas of our lives.

In this workshop, we’ll explore Saturn and Capricorn in our birth charts and what the 2018-2020 period means in the world and in our individual lives.

Using both lecture and experiential exercises, we will work with your own charts so you can recognize opportunities and develop strategies to use this period as productively as possible.

Requirements: Interest in astrology and a birth chart. (If you don’t have one, send me your birth data (date, time, and place) to me and I’ll provide it for you.

Honoring Mars: mastering the essential skill of going after what you want

Our ability to successfully go after what we want is essential for thriving.

Mars in our charts symbolizes how we go about getting what we want, how we bounce back from adversity, and how we pioneer changes out of necessity or inspiration. Yet our culture generally doesn’t train us (except in the military and in sports) to use our Mars effectively; often we receive messages to disable our Mars (“be nice!”).

In this workshop, we’ll explore our love/fear relationship with Mars, and look at ways to work more effectively with our own martial energies and desires.

Our capacity to think and imagine (symbolized by Mercury) profoundly affects our view of the world, our capacity to grow and change, and even our health. How does your Mercury perceive and transmit information? Class material draws from astrology, research findings from neuroscience and public health, and class participation. We will discuss general principles and apply them to your charts.

About Sheila

With Mercury in Pisces, I’ve had a lifelong fascination with the way our stories (personal and collective) frame our experience. Throughout my life—working in areas as diverse as playwriting, public health, social activism, and astrology—I’ve explored the power of stories to help expand our capacity to live and love more fully. (YouTube links below offer examples of my approach.)

Astrology has been and continues to be the richest, most illuminating and still mysterious symbolic language in my experience. It’s a way to explore our individual paths and locate ourselves in the larger story of time. It’s been a joy and a privilege to serve as a translator for astrology.
